Getting support for self and setting boundaries

To support someone experiencing gambling harms, you must also take care of yourself. If someone’s gambling is affecting you in any way, there’s help and support available for you.

Setting boundaries when someone you care about is gambling

If someone close to you is gambling in a harmful way, you might be feeling a mix of emotions anger, sadness, frustration, or even betrayal. These feelings are valid and completely normal. It’s okay to feel hurt.

Whatever you're feeling, try not to blame yourself and try not to blame them either. Gambling harm is complex, and support is available for both of you.

Here are some things that have worked for others in a similar situation:

  • Limiting your own financial involvement. This might include managing money separately, getting legal or financial advice
  • Agree not to blame each other and yourselves. This can help open and honest conversations.
  • Finding ways to express your feelings. This may need to be with other people who you trust so you can still be supportive to each other.
  • Reaching out for your own support. For support, call Asian Family Services at 0800 862 342 for a free chat with a counsellor
